The Midwest Gang Investigators Association (MGIA) is a professional association that was formed in 1987 for the purpose of providing a collaborative approach toward sharing gang intelligence and addressing gang activity within the Midwest region. Historically, the 2000-member association has included the states of Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and Kentucky. We are pleased to announce that in 2012 the number of states now represented within MGIA has been expanded to 12 with the inclusion of South Dakota and North Dakota, which are now officially referred to as the Dakotas Chapter of the MGIA.
While gang activity across South and North Dakota is not as pronounced as it is in other locations, it occurs nonetheless, not only in our larger communities across both states, but in our smaller tribal and non-tribal communities as well. Recognizing that gang members engage in criminal activity in jurisdictions large and small, and recognizing that gang members consistently cross jurisdictional boundaries, it was decided that including the Dakotas within the MGIA family was an appropriate and worthwhile endeavour.
The purpose of this letter is not only to provide you with this introduction to the Dakotas Chapter, but to encourage you to become a member of our chapter. As a member, you will have greater access to gang-based information sharing and training throughout the Midwest region, and you will be a member of a professional gang investigators association.
Membership costs are $25.00 per year, with $10.00 of this amount going to the Dakotas Chapter. With those funds we intend to hold periodic training events in both states, and the more members we have, the more we will be able to defray the cost of holding such events. I would encourage you to visit the MGIA Membership Information page to access the application form to become a member.
If you have any questions about becoming a member of the MGIA Dakotas Chapter, please contact any of the executive board members listed below. Thank you.
